Alkes Field

Summary

Home of many infamous criminals along the larger of the asteroids within this lethal concentration of space debris - none so dangerous as Praxis Pillars nearest one of the Scorpion stations. Despite the dangers of this region, many corporations based on Osiris have established themselves through very prosperous mining ventures in Alkes Field - particularly those that harvest raw Ritelanium ore. Alkes Field also plays host to numerous, annual space races.

Points of Interest

Ar-gentah

This dwarf planet hasn't been officially claimed, because extensive mineral deposits on its surface have rendered its atmosphere hazardous to the human species. Direct exposure usually causing sterility. This has resulted in a heavy security immigration policy for those who are to visit this poisonous world.

Thus the main population of this world consists of highly paid souls taking agreat risk, and felons seeking reduced sentences, who mine the plentiful minerals of the world. While the main feature of this world is its phenomenal mineral deposits, it should also be noted that on a chain of islands in its southern hemisphere. The dwarf planet does however provide a nice point of retreat for many weary workers, with a small station in orbit around the dwarf planet. Several fighters at the ready at any time to destroy incoming debris.

Praxis Pillars

Remnants of failed worlds, the Praxis Pillars are a series of colossal cylindrical bodies in the Alkes Field. The set of twelve pillars are large enough to pull in much of the surrounding debris and create an orbital cloud. Miners and companies routinely visit the pillars and harvest material from the cloud, yet leave the pillars themselves alone.

When men arrived in the system there were thirteen among the Praxis Pillars. Going after the richest and largest resources in the system was not unheard of and remains an accepted practice. Yet when it came to the pillars a greater value was seen. The Ras Elased system is lacking in beauty when compared to the other systems. At no small difficulty, a campaign to save the remaining pillars from destruction emerged amongst the general population within the Ras Elased system. Their efforts to save the Praxis Pillars helped make the marvelous formation the first recognized heavenly wonder in the system.

Miners cut sizable holes in the orbital cloud routinely not only because it is profitable, but so that tourist traffic can reach the pillars safely and enjoy the spectacular columns forever adrift.

Pull Yards of Alkes

Unlike scrappers who went out to the junk and ripped it apart, the men and women of the vast wastes in the Ras Elased system drew upon natural inspiration to make their job easier. Seeing the effect the Praxis Pillars had on the asteroids of the Alkes Field, salvagers made a junkyard big enough to create a gravitational effect.

The practice of turning a junkyard into a rotating mass was pioneered in the outer reaches of the Ras Elased, and the practice is used in virtually every system today. Most of the composition of the Alkes Pulls is the byproduct of extensive mining. Rubble in the form of useless asteroids is tossed into the mix, making these Pulls the densest of all.

This system also has more Pull Yards than any other system, though many of them don't rotate. These are uninhabited as well, as most of the population focuses on ore extraction, rather than cleaning up unusable rock.
