Malanite Crystals

As galactic needs for more efficient, greater capacity data storage units continued to rise, many hundred different materials and data interpretation methods were tested. None proved quite as successful as data-binding on a sub-atomic level, but the few material composites capable of supporting such storage were either not widely available or were not structurely-stable enough to contain capacities desired.

A solution did not present itself until a large source of one of the materials, a crystal known as Malanite, was discovered on the newly colonized moon of Savin, Armaria.

Malanite crystals, or more often referred to as simply data crystals, boast data access and retrieval times in nanoseconds allowing for approximately 300 pedabytes of data storage per square inch su. With additional advantages such as virtually no degradation and indestructible under nearly all conditions, Malanite Crystals have become the undisputed leader in mobile data storage.

Synthetic crystals are produced in manufacturing labs across the universe. These supplemental facilities have allowed the natural, limited supply of crystal on Armaria to evolve into a high-class status symbol for the wealthy and powerful. Such crystal is found in premier designer electronics and cybernetics. While the marketing of the Armaria crystals would say otherwise, the functionality of the natural and synthetic crystals is identical.
