The IG-47 Terraform Engine
While terraform engines had been in use since the early 2100s, there was always a drive to make an engine that would perform the task more quickly than the E06. After many failed iterations, Hughes-Holtz, a large technology firm based on Mars, developed the IG-47.After numerous computer simulations and laboratory tests, the IG-47 was deemed ready for testing, and flown to a medium-sized planet in the Chantilas System, Aquelas. While the engine did manage to terraform the planet's surface in record time, there were some unexpected consequences.
While the Aquelas incident ensured that the IG-47 would be decommissioned, it managed to revolutionize the way that scientists went about developing terraform engines. Since, they have developed a number of new techniques, including some multi-stage designs that promise to tailor worlds to exact specifications set by the engineers. However, it is unlikely that this will ever be proven, as most planets and systems are reluctant to deal with Hughes-Holtz after their last flub.
