Your First Roleplay

Hopefully, you've already taken the time to create a character and register him/her as well as having already done your first training. Now you're probably wondering how to get your journey started and, in fact, how things are handled overall. This page will attempt to cover all you should know as quickly and thoroughly as possible so you can begin interacting with the other members and, if all goes well, construct the beginning of a rich and compelling story.

Scope of Play

First thing to keep in mind is that Starborn is a fairly large (by free-form RPG standards) RPG so you're sure to meet a large assortment of new people. Almost all are very friendly and eager to help new members - especially since the staff will take actions against any member that acts hateful to new members.

With that said, you shouldn't be afraid to simply visit the main OOC (stands for Out-of-Character) forum called Bootlegger Corridor and make a short post to introduce yourself. This, of course, is optional. If you're too shy or would rather not expose yourself to the entire RPG, that is perfectly fine and very reasonable. Yet we encourage you to get involved on both the Starborn forums as well as the InMyth Network forums.

While expansive the material behind Starborn is not meant to be overwhelming, like any good game manual pick and choose your areas of interest. Doing so will help you avoid sinking in the setting.

Roleplay Structure

Typically, first roleplays are best done when it addresses the most basic of details about your character such as, but not limited to:
  • Where is he/she from?
  • What was his/her past like?
  • What condition is he/she in right now?
  • What goals/ambitions does he/she have?
Answering these questions help you to discover what interests you and your character. Self-discovery of your story is important.

Tone & Identity

Keep in mind that most roleplays on Starborn are written in third person, non-personal, language. This standard has emurged with the thought that you are telling the story of your character, but you are not your character. However, you may choose to write in any fashion you feel suits.

To help other members navigate your posts maintain your character's name in descriptions. When/if you roleplay in a group of people on a single thread, it can get very complicated and even undesirable to read if everyone is referring to their character as me or I.

Group Play

The staff tries to encourage new members to actively join (or create themselves) groups (crews, in SB terms) of characters to roleplay with. This way, most new members won't be so easily discouraged by the sometimes daunting size/scope of Starborn. It also seems to help maintain your interest in your story when others are involved in it. This isn't always the case and, in fact, some members can roleplay their entire stay on SB completely alone, but we cannot advise it - especially for those just starting off.

As an added incentive, the traditional phrase of safety in numbers stands true on SB. New members could, potentially, be vulnerable to veteran members with much stronger characters, but when you join with others you become, naturally, a harder target. The staff, however, tries its best to discourage members from going on mindless rampages.

In conclusion, it certainly never hurts to read! Read the site; read the forums; read as much as you can stand. This will not only help you learn all you can about the SB universe, but might also shed some light on more interesting plot twists you'd like to throw into your own storyline.

And, of course, have fun!
