Starborn: Heritage

Playing at InMyth

Members of games at InMyth participate in the story by posting the individual story of their character(s) alongside other players. Each story is open-ended and bound only by an individual’s interest in staying true to the main body of game material. Assuming the role of any character – from space-faring explorer, to an eloquent diplomat, calloused trader, or battle-tired pilot – you act out the story of your character alone or weave a complex narrative adventure alongside other player’s own stories. Post individually at your own speed, or form a group with others and help craft the future of your unique game-world. Gaming takes place at a creative level, but are underpinned by a strong, automated game engine. Below we have compiled general explanations on how things work and included targeted examples based on Starborn’s game play format.

Getting Started

How Does It Work?

Starborn is played as a traditional play-by-post game, or PbP RPG, where players congregate on a site-wide forum to tell their individual stories, and impact the game's universe as a whole.

Yet unlike other PbP RPGs, Starborn expands the traditional model to include a detailed character management system that allows players to advance their character through story and the game mechanics that glue it all together. Our system is part of the InMyth Network and runs on the InMyth Game Designer (IGD) Platform.

Everyday that a player is active he or she is able to post in either in-character, IC, or out-of-character, OOC, forums. The IC forums are tracked for activity, and through this players acquire money, credits, and experience points (XP). Players use these to develop their character by acquiring or advancing skills, shopping for items like weapons or various tools, and forming player organizations like ship crews, guilds, and/or clans.

InMyth Gaming

If you don't understand some of the terminology listed in this guide and other guides, check out the Common Terms on play-by-post terminology.

Character Creation

Creating a character is free and easy. You need only setup a free account on InMyth.com, then you can create your character on Starborn and/or any other hosted game on InMyth.

When you're ready to join, you'll only need to decide on a few basic details about your character to set one up:

  • Name - First, Last, and optionally a Nickname/Alias
  • Race – On Starborn Pick one of at least eight Races
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Summary (optional)

Later, you can edit your character's profile to fill in additional fields like interests, goals, fears, occupation, education, family, etc.

For an example of a typical starting package: On Starborn, once you create your character, you'll receive 2,000 XP and 300 credits to start your adventure. You can immediately use your base XP and credits to acquire your character's initial skills and/or purchase items.

Posting & Playing

Every game on InMyth is able to mix and match the design elements available in the IGD. This allows us to have unique games that have commonalities for easy player movement between games. Removing the steep learning curve of a new system every time a user switches allows games at InMyth to have a few central elements in common. As noted above in How Does it Work, games here are focused on the user's creative output.

Skills & Character Progression

Skills on Starborn provide a good example for what to expect. Starborn offers over a one hundred and twenty (120) skills for users to explore and intermingle. Some skills have prerequisites that create a tiered skill tree requiring dedication and advancement to a specialty. Others are tied to a specific race or species, enabling race-based skills to develop and further differentiate players’ characters.

Items

Game items are just as flexible, if not more so, than skills. Starborn works to allow players to explore different specialties and levels of item quality as they grow within the game world. We specifically create items aimed at different types of players from stage of game play to interest and specific game specialty. Held within fully customizable categories, items can be resold and additionally support the ability to "upgrade" one another.

Crews/Groups

Games here are able to support player created organizations such as ship crews on Starborn, parties in fantasy settings, or corporations in the modern world. This connectivity is an important part of the play that is available on InMyth. Networking with others you are exposed to a larger array of stories, ideas, and opportunities for involvement. We have established advertisement forums so that new and existing players can connect with others with similar interests.

Continued development?

InMyth runs on the IGD platform and is being built around the feedback of its players. We are cataloging a development timeline that looks forward to large, flexible upgrades that will improve user experiences player and game maker alike. If you want to get involved in helping us design the standard please, jump in today – we need the feedback and community support.

Standards of Play

Typically, first roleplays are best done when it addresses the most basic of details about your character such as, but not limited to:

  • Where is he/she from?
  • What was his/her past like?
  • What condition is he/she in right now?
  • What goals/ambitions does he/she have?

Answering these questions help you to discover what interests you and your character. Self-discovery of your story is important.

Tone & Identity

Keep in mind that most roleplays on Starborn are written in third person, non-personal, language. This standard has emurged with the thought that you are telling the story of your character, but you are not your character. However, you may choose to write in any fashion you feel suits.

To help other members navigate your posts maintain your character's name in descriptions. When/if you roleplay in a group of people on a single thread, it can get very complicated and even undesirable to read if everyone is referring to their character as me or I.

Suggestions for Success

In conclusion, it certainly never hurts to read! Read the site; read the forums; read as much as you can stand. This will not only help you learn all you can about the SB universe, but might also shed some light on more interesting plot twists you'd like to throw into your own storyline. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask them. Our staff is active, growing, and interested in helping you gain a handle on the system. Moreover, if you are looking for good ways to connect, check out another guide aimed at new members.

Most of all, welcome, and we hope to be playing with you soon.
